We Are Psychologists: Short Film

May 14, 2019

Chartered Psychologist Steven Sylvester reflects on the honour of featuring in the British Psychological Society’s film We Are Psychologists alongside his son Zak, celebrating compassion, curiosity, and the power of psychology to create real-world impact.

The British Psychological Society has produced a short film to showcase the diversity of the psychologists. The film, which was written by members, also starred members, including Dr Hamira Riaz, Dr Dan O'Hare, Professor Carolyn Mair, Steven Sylvester, Zak Sylvester, Jo Hemmings and Lloyd Emeka.

Summary by Steven Sylvester:

It was a genuine honour to appear in the British Psychological Society’s short film “We Are Psychologists” and even more meaningful to share the experience alongside my son, Zak.

The film beautifully captures what psychology truly represents: compassion, curiosity, and care. It reminds us that psychology is not confined to therapy rooms or research papers, it’s woven into every aspect of life. From improving workplaces and schools to shaping communities and conversations, psychologists help people understand themselves and others, creating change that starts from within.

The BPS message, that psychologists are people who “think about thinking” and seek to help others understand why we do what we do, resonates deeply with my own journey. For both Zak and I, psychology is about unlocking human potential, helping individuals perform at their best, and promoting wellbeing through understanding, not judgment.

This film is a celebration of our profession’s diversity and purpose. It highlights how psychology continues to evolve, offering hope, insight, and practical impact in a complex world.
